Application of Damping Materials in Modern Torpedo Design

Application of Damping Materials in Modern Torpedo Design Torpedo itself is a thermodynamic torpedo which is widely used by many mechanical equipments and moving components. In thermodynamic torpedo, all kinds of pumps, intermediate frequency generators and driving mechanisms of propulsion system are very complex. Vibration of these devices is very large during the working process, resulting in high underwater radiated noise of torpedo, which affects the operational efficiency of torpedo. Taking effective measures to reduce the radiated noise level of torpedo is a key technology in modern torpedo design. Damping material has attracted more and more attention in modern torpedo design because of its remarkable characteristics of vibration and noise reduction. In the United States, damping material was first used in the propulsion system of torpedo to reduce the noise of propulsion system. In the United States, the noise reduction of M K 48-16A torpedo is mainly improved by adding a muffler at the tail and a damping layer on the back shell, which greatly reduces the radiated noise level of the torpedo. The 2000 torpedo developed in Sweden has also adopted damping measures. The engine piston of the torpedo is connected with the compressor piston, and the whole device is arranged along the engine circumference. The new and unique high-energy, track-free propulsion system not only greatly improves the speed and range of the torpedo, but also significantly reduces the radiation noise of the whole torpedo. In recent years, the research results show that the vibration and noise level of torpedo can be significantly reduced by placing damper layer on the inner surface of the rear cabin shell of torpedo, where the engine vibration is greater. It is expected that the use of damper material as the component of torpedo thermal power device and the vibration and noise reduction base will bring more significant effect.
